Writing Descriptions Term 3

Purpose

A description is used in all forms of writing to create a vivid impression of a person, place, object or event.

To show rather than tell the reader what something or someone is like.

Relies on carefully chosen vocabulary such as adverbs and adjectives

Is focused and concentrates only on the aspects that add something to the main purpose of the description.

Uses the senses- what is heard, seen, smelt, felt, tasted

Precise use of adjectives, similes and metaphors to create images and pictures in the mind.

Uses powerful verbs and precise nouns

WALT: Write Descriptions ( Weeks 1-5)

For example:Mad Max ( A short description that we brainstormed)

Max is a bright yellow monkey. He is as yellow as the sun. He is 10 years old and only as tall as a four year old child. His fur is as soft as a furry blanket. He smells better than a kowhai flower.

Now add

Some funny or serious things that he does.

What is his personality like?

What are his favourite activities?

What is his favourite food and why?

Write a really colourful description of Max using some of these great ideas.

Here is another example of a description of a person.
The Scientist

The scientist was thin and spidery. His hair shot away from his head as if he had been plugged into a light socket. He wore a long, white lab coat with forgotten toast in the pocket and his shirt was buttoned wrongly. He stared intensely at a test tube while his constant companion, a rat named Jerome, ran up his arm and across his shoulders.

We use our senses to write great descriptions- what does it
smell like?
look like?
sound like?
feel like?
taste like?
Use your imagination and paint pictures with words
